I am a full-time library student at Syracuse University. I will be graduating Spring 2008 from SU's MSLIS program with a Master's Degree as well as a Certificate in Digital Libraries. I am a mid-life returning student hoping to combine my love for film along with a career as a librarian. I am beginning to plan my internship (non-paid, but course credit) for January 2008 (Spring Semester) my final semester at SU. I am hoping to relocate as well at the same time. I would like very much to do an internship in a film or media library. I am interested in either academic or special librarianship.Any suggestions? (Source: Everyone's Blog Posts - Library 2.0)
My library currently has 2 blogs - one for our summer reading program and one that's accessible on the web but is primarily for staff. I'd be happy to answer some questions if you still need help. Krista (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
I've created a couple of wikis for my library system. One is basically our rolodex online - it's a reference tool for staff who work the call center. The other is a work in progress that involves putting our obituary index online. You can see it at scottsdaleobituaries.pbwiki.com . You can see we still have a long way to go on that one! We've been talking about making an internal wiki for our policies and procedures, but it hasn't gotten off the ground yet. (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
Laura Cohen has another great post. This one focuses on the social web and how to approach it with caution. As usual, I agree with her completely. Her comments about Twitter also make sense to me even though I continue to play with it when I have time.Library 2.0: An Academic's Perspective: A Cautious Person's Guide to the Social Web (Source: Baby Boomer Librarian)
To fill in an application for a Fulbright program I need to mention at least three institutions in the USA I would prefer to visit or study at. I have some ideas based on my own web-site analysis. But maybe you can recommend some university or library that will be of a great help for a young lady interested in virtual reference, realization web 2.0 ideas and teaching information literacy. Thanks in advance (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
Hi 2.0 folks, I'm looking for a web application that would function as a to-do list, or even project management software. (I got this idea from reading all the posts concerning Twitter vs. Jaiku. The connection to Library 2.0 is one of staffing - that to increase transparency, if we could have our priorities made available to each other, we'd increase the opportunity for being an open workplace and increase communication. I see there is a very brief evaluation of such applications in the article Do More: Online To Do Lists Compared (on TechCrunch). But since I trust librarians, I was wondering if anyone here on Library 2.0 had tried any of these products or had some thoughts to share. (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
Last discussed here in May of 2006, de-Dewefication has begun at the new Perry branch library in Maricopa county, Arizona. The library will open without using Dewey classification. Their books will be shelved by topic. Maricopa County officials say the Perry Branch library will be organized like a bookstore. Instead of assigning them numbers, the tens of thousands of books will be shelved by topic. County librarians say it's time to do away with the century-old Dewey Decimal system. They say it's too confusing for people to hunt down books using those long strings of numbers and letters. The idea to get rid of Dewey came from Marshall Shore -- an adult service coordinator for the Maricopa County Library District. He says that patrons are frustrated by the old cataloging system. He says that the libraries must adapt to their customers needs.Articles here and here.  (Source: LibraryCrunch)
Hello! I'm fairly new to all this, although I've been working in a library for quite a few months now. I work in an academic research library in central London and it's great. I only have about three months left in this job though before I am cast out into the big sea of unemployment, so I am on a mission to learn everything I can about Web 2.0 in libraries in the hope of giving my CV the edge... and, obviously, staying up-to-date with my job! Well, I'm pretty new to this blogging thing, although I'm reliably informed that I've probably been reading other people's without realising it. I'm keen to get to know more about Web 2.0 and especially Library 2.0, so I imagine the best way of doing so is to just jump straight in. I'm kind of getting the idea about most things and I can see how we could really improve our library, but what is the best way of suggesting these changes? Has anyone else managed to convince a reluctant boss/team and if so, what swung it for you? (Source: Everyone's Blog Posts - Library 2.0)
It was interesting to read from Library Link of the day that the Gilbert Library in Arizona is about to open it doors next month with it’s entire collection not categorized with the Dewey System! Instead the collection will be presented similar to a book store with books shelved by topic. This is bound to make a [...] (Source: Off the trolley)
That is a quite impressive site. Good thing I like researching technology ;) (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
All the papers ánd presentation of the Inforum 2007 Conference came available just yesterday in pdf. I will name some more interesting talks below. Some of them I have to look into, because I just missed them. There are relatively a large number of product pitches, but some of those are just very good to see what is happening. Hello Kevin, How do you think social networking like Myspace and others will be used in libraries? Welcome aboard! Ronald Davis (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
We are also interested in implementing federated search. We have held off for three reasons. First, our ILS is not stable (we have Dynix Horizon which is going to be phased out in place of Sirsi and we're waiting to see what will happen with that). Second, we pay for some of our databases via consortia and for some of the biggest ones, our usage figures into the pricing structure. We are afraid that the federated search tool will result in more search traffic that will drive up our costs. Finally, the cost has been out of reach. Does your library have concerns about any of the same issues? (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
My library is just starting the research process when it comes to FSE. We are looking at what is available and finding out what other academic libraries are using and going from there. Cost is always a concern. In the long run, my committee makes suggestions but it is up to others to make the final decisions. (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
I have not used it, but others have mentioned neomyz to me. (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
Laurie's comments bring up something else I can share. Our current chat reference service requires people to click on a link that opens a pop up. We get many people that we cannot help due to pop up blockers. It is one of the reasons we are investing IM alternatives. (Source: Forum - Library 2.0)
The deep Web, as it is called, holds bounties of treasures. I am mainly interested in Web-based databases that are not covered by search engines such as Google. I have posted a number of them to this Web page: Deep Web http://libwww.cabrillo.edu/about/AdvIntSearching/DeepWebDatabases.html There are also digital libraries, some of which I have linked to this Web page:http://libwww.cabrillo.edu/about/AdvIntSearching/DigitalLibraries.htmlTiny URL for that: http://tinyurl.com/2chjrlSo, I'm not talking about the proprietary Web, subscription databases, or places not covered by search engines because they provide dynamically generated information.I am interested in how one could provide access to these kinds of databases. Federated searching? Or, roll your own search engine using http://www.rollyo.com/ or Google's CSE (Customized Search Engine)? (Source: Everyone's Blog Posts - Library 2.0)
